Suzuki Swift Hybrid - Cheapest car to own and operate (again)...

2025-11-06

Following on from winning the 2024 award, the Suzuki Swift has once again been named by the RACQ (Royal Automobile Club of Queensland) the “most affordable” car for 2025.

Queensland’s peak motoring body crunched the numbers on the running costs* of 55 cars available on the Australian market, across multiple categories. In the light passenger category, the Suzuki Swift Mild Hybrid, which comes at a cost of $874 per month and an affordable price tag of (circa) $28,000, has been crowned as the most affordable car to own and operate in 2025.

RACQ Principal Technical Researcher Andrew Kirk said the research lifted the bonnet on the hidden costs of car ownership. “We calculated everything from fuel and servicing to insurance and depreciation to give car owners a clear picture of just how much it’ll cost them over a five-year period, and the Swift came out on top for affordability,” Mr Kirk said.

The Suzuki Swift Hybrid came in as Queensland’s most affordable car to own and operate, costing $874 a month to run. “Everyone has different needs and expectations from their vehicle, so doing your research is essential,” Mr Kirk said.

*Total costs were calculated using registration, insurance, fuel, servicing, and tyres based on 15,000 kilometres/year for five years. Loan repayments over 5 years if purchase was fully financed through RACQ Bank.
